Over 4,000 servicemen engaged in air defense drill in Astrakhan region

MOSCOW. Aug 4 (Interfax-AVN) - Army air defense units had a shooting practice at the Kapustin Yar training range in the Astrakhan region. There were operational launches of Buk-M1, Osa and Strela-10 air defense missiles and shooting from Igla portable anti-aircraft launchers and Tunguska air defense artillery and missile launchers, Army spokesman Lt. Col. Sergei Vlasov told Interfax-AVN on Thursday.

"The shooting practice was a part of the strategic air defense and air force exercises in the Western Strategic Sector," he said.

"Air-based Saman and Falanga targets and ground-based targets were hit successfully," he said.

More than 4,000 servicemen and over 100 pieces of military hardware are taking part in the exercises supervised by chief of the Western military district staff Admiral Nikolai Maximov, he said.

The next shooting practice, this time involving S-300 missile systems, will take place on August 11. The results of the exercises will be summed up on August 14, he said.
