Moscow calls for resuming talks between Israelis, Palestinians - Lavrov

MOSCOW. Aug 10 (Interfax) - Moscow believes the possibility that the UN could consider the recognition of Palestine's independence does not make Palestinian-Israeli negotiations irrelevant.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman had a telephone conversation on Wednesday, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

"Lavrov emphasized that Russia remains a firm supporter of a negotiated solution to the Palestinian problem based on a well-known and commonly recognized international legal basis and the principle of two states," the ministry said.

"The minister referred to the Palestinian National Authority's and the League of Arab States' declared position that "the UN campaign is not an alternative to the negotiating process or an attempt to isolate Israel," it said.

The two ministers paid special attention to the current situation in the Middle East peace process and the prospect of consideration of issues related to this at the upcoming UN General Assembly.

"Lavrov also stressed that Russia, both in its national capacity and as a member of the Quartet on the Middle East, will do all that it can to advance the resumption of Palestinian-Israeli negotiations as soon as possible," the ministry said.
