BISHKEK. Oct 17 (Interfax) - The Kyrgyz authorities will not allow destabilization in the presidential election campaign period, which ends on October 30, Acting Prime Minister, First Vice-Premier Omurbek Babanov told reporters on Monday.
"The main task of the government is the transparent and calm presidential election," he said.
"We will not allow any candidates to exceed the limits of law and thwart stability," he noted.
"Last year was very difficult [Kyrgyzstan witnessed a change of administration and inter-ethnic clashes], but that would never repeat," Babanov said.
"If [Prime Minister, presidential candidate] Almazbek Atambayev wins the election, he will remain the premier until his inauguration and then will order a parliament faction to form the new government," he said.
Reporters asked whether the ruling coalition might break up after the presidential election. "The coalition, which currently unites three parties [the Republic Party, the Social Democrats and Ata Zhurt], may be preserved or even broadened" in the case of Atambayev's victory, he said. One of the opposition factions (Ata Meken or Arnamys) may join the coalition, he said.
Babanov is the leader of the Republic Party who was authorized by President Rosa Otunbayeva in December 2010 to form the ruling coalition.
He lauded the work of the coalition government, which "attained economic growth, solved serious social problems and found money to cover the budget deficit by the time of the election campaign."
