Moscow backs Arab League's efforts to promote dialogue inside Syria

MOSCOW. Oct 18 (Interfax) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov noted the great importance of the Arab League's efforts to help sort out the situation in Syria in a telephone conversation with the league's Secretary-General Nabil al-Arabi.

"Lavrov noted the great importance of the Arab League's efforts and role in promoting this dialogue, stressing Russia's staunch commitment to the need for the Syrians themselves to resolve their domestic problems on the basis of a consensus and the implementation of political and socioeconomic reforms for the benefit of the entire nation," the Russian Foreign Ministry said on its website on Monday.

At a special session of the league's Council of Ministers in Cairo on October 16, al-Arabi reaffirmed the organization's position in favor of resolving Syria's problems through broad national dialogue and without any foreign intervention in the country's internal affairs.
