Chechnya's hundreds of blood feuds settled - leaders

GROZNY, Russia. Oct 18 (Interfax) - All blood feuds in Chechnya have been settled, according to the republic's head of administration Ramzan Kadyrov and Mufti Sultan Mirzayev, the latter saying there were 451 blood feuds in Chechnya.

"The conciliation commission set up in August 2010 has carried out its main task of settling blood feuds and is being disbanded," Kadyrov said at a meeting with Mirzayev on Monday.

"The commission had a difficult task, there was a great deal of work to do, but, owing to the grace of the Almighty and our joint efforts, we have been able to settle an enormous number of blood feuds. It can be said confidently today that the commission has coped with its task. There remains not a single blood feud in the republic. For this reason, the commission has been abolished while the tasks of settling family and other conflicts are being passed over to the leadership of the mufti authority," Kadyrov said.

He thanked the commission and the families that had forgiven their blood enemies.

The mufti Mirzayev credited Kadyrov with coming up with a blood feud eradication initiative and said it had enjoyed the support of the population. "Families that have been enemies for decades have come to peace today. It is due to your initiative that this has become possible. The commission found out 451 conflicts. I must state joyfully that all of them have been settled," Mirzayev said.
