MOSCOW. Oct 24 (Interfax) - Former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi lost his legitimacy long ago, but his death on Thursday evokes some questions, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
"Gaddafi lost his legitimacy long ago," Lavrov said in an interview broadcast by the Echo Moskvy, the Voice of Russia, and Radio Rossii radio stations on Friday.
In particular, the Russian president made a special statement on this account, he said.
At the same time, the circumstances of Gaddafi's death should be clarified, Lavrov said.
"The way his death happened surely evokes a number of questions," he said.
"We have to apply international law facts, as there are no other criteria in international affairs," he said.
Gaddafi should have been tried by an international tribunal, he said.
Lavrov also commented on some statements regarding Gaddafi's death. "I have heard statements by many leaders [speaking] with satisfaction or even with joy. I would prefer to refrain from assessing these statements," he said.
