Moscow expects new Libyan authorities to abide by all earlier agreements with Russia - Lavrov (Part 2)

MOSCOW. Oct 24 (Interfax) - Russia expects new Libyan authorities to build relations with Russia within the framework of the agreements that were reached earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

"We want to build relations based on respect for the treaties and agreements that have already been concluded between our countries. Representatives from the National Transitional Council have clearly confirmed to us that they will follow this very logic," Lavrov said in an interview with three Russian radio stations on Friday.

Russia has recognized the National Transitional Council as the legitimate authority that has proclaimed a transition program, Lavrov said. This program should lead to the adoption of a constitution and then parliamentary and other elections on its basis, he said.

Russian officials met with National Transitional Council members at an early stage of the conflict, and Russia is continuing contacts with them now both at the ambassadorial level and at the level of presidential envoy Mikhail Margelov, who has made several trips to Libya, he said.

"We are maintaining regular dialogue," he said.
