ST. PETERSBURG. Oct 25 (Interfax) - The police in St. Petersburg have detained Ukrainian citizen Serhiy Serheyev, who was put on the international wanted list as a suspect in the murder of former Polish President Lech Walesa's nephew, a security service source told Interfax on Tuesday.
"Serheyev was detained on Ushinsky Street at 1:00 p.m. on Monday. He was placed on the international wanted list in 2009 at Ukrainian law enforcement agencies' initiative for committing this murder," the source said.
Serheyev has been taken to a police station, and Interpol's Office in Ukraine, which initiated the search, has already been notified of the man's detention, he said.
Police officials have so far been unavailable for comment.
The Kolpino District Court in St. Petersburg ordered in June 2009 that Serheyev, who was wanted by Interpol, be released from custody because his custodial term set in spring had expired, even though the Prosecutor's Office had submitted documents seeking its extension.
After leaving the city's jail, Serheyev was detained once again because he did not have a passport with a stamp confirming his registration in St. Petersburg.
"But lawyers came to the police station and produced a document confirming his registration in St. Petersburg, removing all grounds for Serheyev's further detention," a police source said then.
The search for Serheyev was stopped following his detention, he said.
