Resumption of direct talks depends of PNA - Israeli PM advisor

MOSCOW. Oct 26 (Interfax) - Israel and the Quartet on the Middle East have done everything in their power to resume direct Israeli-Palestinian talks, now the future of the negotiating process entirely depends on the Palestinians, Israeli Prime Minister's Advisor Alex Selsky said.

"The Quartet supports the Israeli point of view about the direct talks. So far we see that Israel is urging the Palestinians to hold direct talks, the Quartet is supporting it and the Palestinians are not resuming the talks," he told Interfax on Tuesday.

"This is why I do not see anything new that we might expect from the Quartet or from ourselves. I can only see what we can expect from Palestinians, which is unfortunately what we cannot see," the official said.

Selsky was responding to a question as to what Israel is expecting from separate meetings of the Quartet mediators with the Palestinians and the Israeli on October 26.

Asked whether at the meeting on October 26 Israel is ready to announce some concessions, in particular, freezing the settlement policy in the Palestinian territories, so as to convince the Palestinians of starting the direct talks, Selsky said that "we have our positions on these issues, which we put as part of negotiations, but they should start without pre-conditions."

"I cannot start discussing with you now any particular position. This is exactly what the talks are needed for," he added.
