MOSCOW. Nov 17 (Interfax-AVN) - The Russian Defense Ministry expects the defense sector to present new armor in 2012, General Staff Chief Gen. Nikolai Makarov told the Public Chamber on Thursday.
"We are bolstering the defense sector so much that we hope to see a new tank, a new armored personnel carrier and a new infantry combat vehicle next year. There is every ground for doing that," he said.
The Defense Ministry will buy modern aircraft only. "We are buying nothing but new Kamov Ka-52 and Mil Mi-28N helicopters," he said.
Makarov described the Mikoyan MiG-29 and Sukhoi Su-27 jets as "aircraft of the past."
"We buy jets of generation 4+ and close to generation 5 only," he said.
