Fueling tensions over Iran fraught with severe consequences - Russian Foreign Ministry (Part 2)

MOSCOW. Dec 1 (Interfax) - The Russian Foreign Ministry has called for a halt to escalating tensions over Iran further.

"We are categorically opposed to unraveling a spiral of tensions and confrontation over Iran-linked problems. We think that this policy is fraught with severe consequences. Furthermore, growing tensions in relations with Tehran are impeding the resumption of talks between the six states and Iran on the nuclear program," Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said at a press briefing on Thursday.

"I am speaking about the IAEA's [International Atomic Energy Agency] counterproductive, untimely and poor report about suspected military-oriented research allegedly conducted in Iran as part of its nuclear program. I am speaking about the introduction of unilateral extraterritorial sanctions by individual states against this country, as well as totally unacceptable threats to use force against Iran," he said.

Commenting on a recent incident during which Iranian students stormed the British Embassy in Tehran, the Russian diplomat called on Iran to urgently investigate it and to prevent a repetition in the future.
