Suspected accomplices of suicide bomber on trial in Kazakhstan

AKTOBE, Kazakhstan. Dec 1 (Interfax) - A court in Kazakhstan is trying 12 suspected terrorists who are believed to have been accomplices of the perpetrator of a suicide bombing several months ago.

The Aktobe Specialized Interdistrict Criminal Court is holding the trial behind closed doors "at the request of the injured party" and outside its headquarters "for security reasons," court spokeswoman Iliada Dosova told Interfax on Thursday.

The suspects are charged with propaganda, the practice and financing of terrorism, organization of a terrorist group, and illegal manufacturing and possession of weapons.

National Security Committee spokesman Viktor Bespalko told Interfax that the offenses to be considered at the trial included a suicide bombing in May this year in which the attacker, 25-year-old local resident Rakhimzhan Makatov, killed himself and injured two others.

The trial started on Tuesday.
