Over 9,000 officials charged with corruption in 2011 - prosecutor general

MOSCOW. Jan 12 (Interfax) - More than 9,000 public officers were charged with corruption in Russia last year, Prosecutor General Yuri Chaika said in an interview published by the Thursday issue of the newspaper Rossiyskaya Gazeta.

"A total of 8,334 corruption cases with bills of indictment approved by prosecutors were sent to court in nine months of last year. The cases regarded 9,219 individuals," he said.

The majority of them were charged with fraud, embezzlement and abuse of office, Chaika said.

A total of 692 federal and municipal officials were convicted of such crimes, he said.

"Also, 1,139 law enforcers were convicted, among them 250 investigators, 13 prosecutors and one judge," he said.

Sixty deputies of local councils were sentenced, Chaika said. "Seven deputies of regional councils were convicted in 2010 and six in January-September 2011," he concluded.
