MOSCOW. Jan 23 (Interfax) - U.S. ambassador to Moscow Michael McFaul has refuted assumptions that he arrived in Russia to advance democracy.
The accusation was made by several Russian politicians and the media. The fact that shortly after his arrival in Moscow McFAul met several Russian public and opposition figures, including representatives of the Communist Party, A Just Russia, Yabloko and PARNAS caused the greatest uproar.
By the way in 2009 U.S. President Barack Obama met with the same opposition leaders, including the Communist party, McFAul wrote in his blog adding that he could not recall that the media would have carried similar headlines as in his case.
The policy of reset has not changed, the ambassador stressed.
