Teenage crime declines in Moscow

MOSCOW. Feb 3 (Interfax) - Moscow prosecutors have registered a decline in teenage crime in Moscow in 2011. However, the number of crimes committed by teenagers in the Northeastern District of Moscow went up by one-third.

"Teenager crime in Moscow went down by 10.7%. Unfortunately, the number of such crimes went up by one-third in the Northeastern District of the city," Moscow Prosecutor Sergei Kudenev said.

Kudenev said the number of thefts, incidents of hooliganism, and car theft by teenagers went up considerably in Moscow in 2011.

Kudenev also said the prosecutors had considerably intensified anti-extremism work in 2011.

"The number of lawsuits seeking the recognition of various materials as extremist increased from 35 to 61 [in 2011]," he said.

The prosecutors' activities helped close the Islamic magazine Khaliphate, halt the operation of the Movement against Illegal Migration, and block user access to some materials recognized as extremist, he said.
