Abkhazia will not trade independence for preferences - President Ankvab

SUKHUMI. Feb 9 (Interfax) - Abkhazia declines the so-called neutral passports invented by Georgia, Abkhaz President Alexander Ankvab told head of the EU Delegation to Georgia Ambassador Philip Dimitrov in Sukhumi.

"We will never use these [neutral] passports," Ankvab said and showed Abkhaz passports to the ambassador.

In his words, Abkhaz passports met international standards although Europe and the rest of the world does not recognize them so far.

Ankvab recalled that Abkhazia proposed issuing its citizens UN neutral passports after the war.

"Georgia opposed that proposal and Russia stretched out a helping hand. We do not need any other ids now," he said.

Ankvab said it was possible to cooperate with Europe in science, education, culture and business. At the same time, "the friends to Georgia must quit the idea of involvement without recognition," he said. "We are surprised with the same tone and text of international diplomats. We are tired of this diplomatic manner. If nothing changes, the dialogue will be senseless. It is impossible to involve Abkhazia and Abkhaz into anything in exchange for their independence," he said.

"The number of countries that recognize Abkhazia will grow. We have no communication problems. We will develop independently and with the assistance of Russia and other supportive countries," Ankvab said.
