Syria agrees to settlement plan offered by LAS, Russia - ambassador (Part 3)

MOSCOW. March 12 (Interfax) - Syria is satisfied with the settlement plan suggested by Russia and the League of Arab States at the ministerial conference in Cairo on March 10, Syrian Ambassador to Moscow Riyad Haddad said.

"Regarding the Cairo visit of Mr. Lavrov and the five provisions he coordinated with the Arab countries, we agree to that," he said.

"We agree that violence must stop, but it is also necessary to stop the armed groups," the diplomat said.

He declared the readiness of Damascus to begin the dialogue with the opposition without preconditions.

"Meanwhile, the armed opposition demands the resignation of President al-Assad and says that the dialogue could start only in that case. That is a precondition and an interference in affairs of a sovereign country," he said.

"We also agree to the other provisions, concerning humanitarian affairs and the rest," he said.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said after a meeting with the LAS ministers in Cairo that they had coordinated a five-item settlement plan for Syria.

The plan stipulates the end of violence, no matter where it might come from, the creation of a monitoring mechanism, unhampered delivery of humanitarian aid to all Syrians, support to the Syrian mission of Kofi Annan and impermissibility of external interference in Syrian affairs.
