MOSCOW/KAZAN. April 5 (Interfax) - Tatarstan Interior Minister Asgat Safarov has tendered his resignation over an incident at Kazan's Dalny police department, a source from the Volga Federal District law enforcement agencies told Interfax on Thursday.
"Safarov tendered his voluntary resignation several days ago," the source said.
"Safarov's resignation is likely to be accepted," he said.
Safarov had told Interfax at the end of March that he was calm about demands that he be dismissed over the incident at the Dalny police department.
The death of Sergei Nazarov after interrogation at the Dalny police department drew a broad public response in early March. Preliminary findings indicate that Nazarov had been tortured. After the incident was widely publicized, complaints about similar cases at the same police department started being filed. Several criminal cases have been opened, and seven former policemen have been arrested under two of them.
A massive inspection was launched at the Tatarstan Interior Ministry following Nazarov's death.
