Court sanctions arrest of Almaty terror suspect in absentia

ALMATY. April 6 (Interfax) - Almalinsky District Court No. 1 in Almaty has sanctioned an arrest in absentia of the former BTA-bank chief's bodyguard Alexander Pavlov, suspected of plotting terrorist attacks in Almaty, a court spokesperson told Interfax on Friday.

On March 24, 2012, Kazakh security agencies foiled a plot to stage explosions in Almaty, the Kazakhstan Prosecutor General's Office said earlier.

The mastermind of this terror plot is Kazakh national Pavlov, who was the chief bodyguard of former BTA-bank chief Mukhtar Ablyazov, wanted by Kazakh law enforcement agencies, prosecutors said.

Pavlov acted together with his accomplice Muratbek Ketebayev, one of the leaders of the non-registered Alga party, who is Ablyazov's closest confidant and permanently based abroad as well, according to prosecutors.
