Georgian demonstrators protest against police brutality

TBILISI. May 2 (Interfax) - Several hundreds of Georgian public and political opposition representatives held a protest in Tbilisi demanding punishment for the policemen who shot two people dead.

"Certain police officers will answer (for this crime) before the law very soon," Free Georgia Party leader Kakha Kukava told reporters.

Six years ago police shot and killed Zurab Vazagashvili and Alexander Khubulov in a car. The police suspected them of a crime an as result of a pursuit at one of road crossings opened gunfire against without warning in front of dozens of eyewitnesses.

"Recently Interior Minister Vano Merabishvili told the parliament that from now on police will not kill people and have not killed anyone in the past four years. The minister believes that the public must forget about the past killings of ordinary citizens by police because there have not been any in the last four years. Our vendetta consists in getting Minister Merabishvili answer for this crime even 15 years after the killing of the innocent Vazagashvili and Khubulov," Kukava said.

The demonstration passed off without any incident. Police were present just to make sure that the demonstrators do not block road traffic.
