MOSCOW. May 15 (Interfax-AVN) - The warships involved in the Pomor-2012 naval maneuvers in the Norwegian Sea - the large Russian submarine chaser, the Admiral Chabanenko, and the Norwegian frigate Fridtjof Nansen, have been joined by the Norwegian coastguard ship, the Senja.
"The active phase of the Pomor maneuvers will last until May 16 and then the Admiral Chabanenko will call at Port Buda in Norway, where the crew will join events marking Norwegian Constitution Day," Northern Fleet spokesman, Captain First Rank Vadim Serga, told Interfax-AVN on Tuesday. "The final stage in the maneuvers is unfolding in the Norwegian Sea today," he said.
"This stage is proceeding under the general command of the Norwegian side and it consists of two main episodes: the inspection of ships, suspected of engaging in illicit activities, and a live artillery firing drill against a "hostile" surface ship, coupled with live firing against a target from the naval force's main artillery piece," Serga said.
"A joint Russian-Norwegian rescue crew quickly and professionally put out a simulated fire, which, according to the scenario, had broken out aboard the Senja, after the Admiral Chabanenko and the Fridtjof Nansen approached the "stricken" ship," Serga said.
The crew also practiced joint operations to track down and destroy a "hostile" submarine.
