Yabloko leader Mitrokhin, other opposition members detained in Moscow

MOSCOW. May 22 (Interfax) - Liberal Yabloko party leader Sergei Mitrokhin and other opposition activists were detained outside the State Duma building in central Moscow during a protest over proposed fines for violations at mass events.

Representatives of Yabloko and the Arbat Protest Camp staged lone protests outside the State Duma, holding banners with slogans reading "If You Inflate Fines, Our Patience Will Burst" and "A Ban on Rallies is a Road to Revolution", an Interfax correspondent has reported.

They also called on citizens to attend a rally at Novopushkinsky Park on May 27.

The police did not use force while detaining the protesters. All detentions were filmed on video cameras.

Fifty people or so gathered outside the State Duma building, among them representatives of Russian and foreign media outlets.

The State Duma is expected to debate a United Russia-proposed bill that raises fines for violations during mass events in the first reading on Tuesday.
