Preparations for Northern Eagle naval maneuvers underway in Murmansk

SEVEROMORSK. May 22 (Interfax-AVN) - Representatives of the Russian, American and Norwegian navies have gathered in Murmansk to discuss specifics of the trilateral naval drill, the Northern Eagle, to be held in August, the Western Military District's Northern Fleet spokesman, Captain First Rank Vadim Serga told Interfax-AVN on Tuesday.

"Representatives of the Northern Fleet combat training department and delegations of the U.S. and Norwegian navies will finally negotiate a plan of the naval maneuvers. During the active phase of the drill the crews are expected to practice tactical compatibility, rebuff mock attacks of small-size high-speed ships and air attack means, as well as communication interoperability, operations to protect ships from attacks at open roadstead, and hold joint maneuvering and navigation training," Serga said.

Before starting the joint maneuvers, the Russian and American warships will call at the Norwegian Port of Bude.

The Northern Eagle naval maneuvers in the Arctic latitudes were held in 2004, 2006 and 2008 by the Russian and American navies. This year, the drill will also involve Norwegian warships for the first time, and the drill will proceed in a trilateral format.
