SCO calls attempts to resolve Iranian issue through force unacceptable

BEIJING. June 7 (Interfax) - Any attempts to resolve the Iranian problem by military methods are unacceptable and would entail unpredictable consequences, the presidents of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization's (SCO) member states said in a declaration adopted in Beijing.

"The member states express serious concern over the situation surrounding Iran, which holds observer status in the SCO. In their opinion, any attempts to resolve the Iranian problem by military methods are unacceptable and would entail unpredictable consequences, threatening stability and security in the region and around the world," the SCO leader said in the declaration.

The SCO member countries called on all sides to demonstrate maximum restraint and refrain from any statements and measures capable of further fueling the confrontation.

They urged the sides to abide by the principles and objectives set by the UN Charter, international law and the UN Security Council's resolutions.

The SCO leaders also supported the launch of sustainable dialogue between the Group of Six world powers (the UN Security Council's five permanent members plus Germany) and Tehran with the aim of finding a political and diplomatic solution to the Iranian nuclear problem.

"The member states expect Iran, as a responsible member of the international community, to play an important role in maintaining peace and prosperity," they said.
