BARNAUL. June 8 (Interfax) - Police in the town of Biisk (Altai Territory) have found a cache at a local garage, containing grenades, TNT, over 1,500 cartridges and a Kalashnikov rifle, a regional police spokesperson told Interfax on Friday.
All the discovered weapons were in good order and ammunition ready to be fired, the spokesperson said.
"The weapons were found at one of the garages on the grounds of a derelict garage building cooperative. The list of the seized ammunition contained more than 10 items. The cache contained a Kalashnikov assault rifle, a Saiga hunter's self-chargeable rifle, 10 magazines for them, 33 grenades of various types with detonators, an RDX explosive substance, and more than 1,500 cartridges of various caliber for a combat firearm," the police officer said.
Police also found in the cache a container with 520 grams of dry substance inside, he said. A test carried out by experts has shown it was a mixture of TNT and ammonium nitrate.
"This arsenal has been in the cache for several years. So far investigators have failed to find an answer to the question as to how such a quantity of ammunition could end up in a small town. Investigators have identified the persons involved in the storage of such an impressive combat kit," said the source, without saying how many were arrested.
They were charged with illegal acquisition, transfer, sale, storage, transportation or possession of a weapon, its basic parts, ammunition, explosive substances and explosive devices.
The case will be forwarded to judges in the very near future.
