UN Security Council will not authorize outside military intervention in Syria - Lavrov (Part 2)

MOSCOW. June 9 (Interfax) - Outside military intervention in Syria will not be sanctioned, otherwise the multi-confessional country risks becoming a battle ground for domination inside the Islamic world, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters on Saturday.

"The Security Council will not sanction military intervention. Let me repeat once again, not because we are protecting Assad or his regime, but because we know that Syria is a complicated multi-confessional state, and because we know that some of those calling for military intervention want to ruin this multi-confessionality and turn Syria into a battle ground for domination inside the Islamic world," he said.

Moscow will actively oppose the implementation of a military scenario in resolving the Syrian conflict, Lavrov said.

"This is the most dangerous trend, and we shall do everything we can to prevent such a scenario," the foreign minister said.
