Current reforms of Interior Ministry do not meet goal - source

MOSCOW. July 2 (Interfax) - Profound transformations, both structural and others, are in store for the Russian Interior Ministry. The ministry's work will be optimized, a police source told Interfax.

"The current reforms of the Interior Ministry do not meet the goal," he said.

"The ministry structure, suggested after the reform was declared last year, would require amendments," the source said.

"It happened so that logistics and procurement units were practically uncut or even grew, while operative units had a personnel loss," he said.

"The present-day Interior Ministry is a pyramid standing upside down. Its upper part is the units, which are not directly linked with the suppression of crime and the provision of public order," he noted. "It is a task of the reform to put it the right way, from the head to the feet."

The transformations will concentrate on the suppression of felonies, organized crime, extremism and terrorism, he said.

There may be changes in main departments of the Interior Ministry in federal districts. "Now they are duplicating the central staff," the source said.

"The structure is being discussed. There are no decisions, and there will be no haste in making any," the source concluded.
