Russia to attend Syrian opposition meeting in Cairo - Lavrov (Part 2)

MOSCOW. July 3 (Interfax) - The Russian ambassador is due to attend a meeting of Syrian opposition representatives in Cairo and will be calling for its unification for the sake of a dialogue with the Syrian authorities, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

"In Cairo, our ambassador will be persuading the Syrian opposition to form common approaches to the peaceful resolution and agree on who will represent them at the talks with the Syrian government," he said, responding to a question posed by Interfax.

Russia is calling on the Syrian opposition to unite on the platform of readiness for a dialogue with the Syrian authorities, as provided by Kofi Annan's plan approved by the United Nations Security Council, the minister added.

"In this context, our attendance of the meeting, which is taking place in Cairo today and tomorrow, aimed at uniting all Syrian opposition forces, looks absolutely logical," the Russian foreign minister said.
