Former education minister to head up Georgian Defense Ministry

TBILISI. July 3 (Interfax) - The post of Interior Minister in the new Georgian government will be taken up by the now former defense minister, Bacho Akhalaya, Georgian President's Press Secretary Manana Manjgaladze said at a briefing on Tuesday.

The Georgian president has already approved the new Cabinet proposed by prime minister candidate Vano Merabishvili, he said.

"This make-up has already been sent to the Georgian Parliament," Manjgaladze said.

Former Minister of Education and Science Dmitry Shashkin will take up the post of the Defense Minister and will be replaced by the current head of the National Examinations Agency, Khatia Dekanoidze, she said.

Dali Khomeriki will be Minister for Internally Displaced Persons and Accommodation, while Paata Trapaidze will become State Minister for Employment.

"We hope that the parliament will swiftly discuss the new candidatures and the government program and approve it on time," the president's spokesperson said.
