Ukrainian opposition demands meeting with president, live broadcast

KYIV. July 4 (Interfax) - The Ukrainian opposition is demanding a meeting with President Viktor Yanukovych to discuss the situation around the passing of the language bill, which must be broadcast live, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, Front for Change party leader and member of the Our Ukraine - People's Self-Defense parliamentary faction, told the protestors outside the Ukrainian House on Khreshchatyk Street in Kyiv.

Yanukovych has postponed his press conference, which was due to start at the Ukrainian House at 11:30 a.m., and is going to meet with senior parliament and faction members at the presidential administration, Yatsenyuk said

The announcement was met with howls of approval among protestors, as well as shouts, "Coward!"

Protestors must be more active and united in defending one another and continue to stay outside the Ukrainian House in the capital's European Square, leader of the Freedom nationalist organization Oleg Tyahnybok said for his part.

Leaflets are being handed out among opposition activists, calling for a rally outside the presidential administration building on Bankovaya Street on July 5 to ask the president not to sign the language bill into law, an Interfax correspondent said.

It was reported that on Tuesday the Ukrainian parliament passed with 248 votes a bill on the foundations of the state language policy, which significantly broadens the use of the Russian language.

The parliamentary opposition claims the language bill was passed on July 3 with multiple violations.

Soon after the vote, a protest began outside the Ukrainian House, which gathered around 700 people. Clashes occurred between protestors and law enforcers on Tuesday night.
