China supports Annan's proposal to involve Iran in Syrian crisis settlement - Beijing

BEIJING. July 12 (Interfax) - Beijing has agreed with UN/Arab League envoy Kofi Annan that the Iranian authorities should contribute to the Syrian crisis settlement.

"China believes that the settlement of the crisis in Syria is inseparable from countries of the region, especially the support and participation of the countries that are capable of influencing the relevant sides in Syria," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin has said speaking of Iran's role in settling the Syrian crisis.

At a joint press conference in Tehran with Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi Annan expressed the opinion that Iran could play a positive role in settling the Syrian crisis.

Meanwhile, the United States and EU are against Iran, a loyal ally of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad, making any contribution to the crisis settlement.

Iran was not invited to the international conference on Syria in Geneva on June 30 even though initially Annan spoke out for inviting an Iranian representative.
