Current Western draft resolution on Syria unacceptable for Moscow - ministry

MOSCOW. July 13 (Interfax) - Russia will not let the United Nations Security Council pass a draft resolution proposed by Western countries over application of Chapter 7 of the UN Charter and sanctions against Syria in case Damascus fails to comply with essential requirements.

Asked what Russia's position will be in case of a voting on the proposed Western resolution, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov told Interfax: "They are not going to do this today. The process of consultations has just begun and will continue for some time."

"But if they decide [to vote], knowing that its content is unacceptable for us, we will not let it pass," Gatilov said.

"It will mean an exacerbation of the political atmosphere around Syria. It will be an unconstructive step on the part of our partners," the high-ranking diplomat said.
