Abkhazia steps up control in Gali district

SUKHUMI. July 13 (Interfax) - Passport checks are underway in Abkhazia's Gali district, located on the border with Georgia, district police chief Laurens Kogonia told journalists on Friday.

"We are launching preventive measures amid the present-day situation - the growing number of murdered civilians and security service personnel," he said.

Abkhaz law enforcement agencies have also been alerted about possible plans by Georgian special services to stage terrorist attacks, Kogonia said.

"Citizens' IDs and residence in this district are being checked," he said.

Local policemen and officers of other Abkhaz services are working on the border.

On July 6, members of Abkhazia's Security Council voiced concern over the deteriorating situation on the border with Georgia.
