Alaed ship chartered by Russia moves along Norwegian coast

LONDON. July 13 (Interfax) - The Alaed freighter has left Murmansk Port and is now moving southward along the coast of Norway, according to the AIS system monitoring ship movements throughout the world.

There is no information about what the ship has aboard. According to AIS, the ship is sailing under the flag of Russia and is expected to arrive at Baltiisk at 11 a.m. local time on July 17.

The draught of the ship is 7.2 meters which could be an indication of it being loaded.

In June 2012, the Alaed transported repaired helicopters to Syria but it was stopped off the coast of Scotland after Britain's Standard Club insurance company severed the contract saying the Alaed was shipping arms to Syria.

At the end of June, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov confirmed that the ship had carried repaired, not new helicopters, to Syria.
