LVIV, Ukraine. July 16 (Interfax) - Ukraine and the United States are launching a joint command post exercise on Monday that will involve training offensive, defense and peacekeeping operations and bring together 1,400 troops.
The Rapid Trident 2012 exercise will be held at the International Peacekeeping and Security Center in the Lviv region, the press group for the exercise said in a report.
Military personnel began arriving in the Lviv region on Friday from 15 participant countries for Rapid Trident 2012, the report said.
The exercise will be coordinated by Maj. Gen. Vyacheslav Nazarkin, first deputy commander of the 8th Army Corps of the Ukrainian Land Forces, and Col. David Markovski of the U.S. Army Europe.
The scenario for the maneuvers is based on the situation in Zabul province of Afghanistan.
Rapid Trident 2012 closes on July 27.
