Belarus assists Belarusians convicted in Libya - Foreign Ministry

MINSK. Sept 27 (Interfax) - Belarus continues to provide legal assistance to the Belarusians convicted in Libya, Belarusian Foreign Ministry press officer Andrei Savinykh told a briefing in Minsk.

"The situation has not changed yet. Belarusian officials maintain contact with them, trying to make their life easier," Savinykh said.

Savinykh also said Belarusian officials are visiting the Belarusian citizens in prison in Libya.

The Belarusian Foreign Ministry earlier reported that three citizens of Belarus had been sentenced by a Libyan court to ten years in prison for "assisting the Gaddafi regime" on June 4.

On August 27, 2011, the Libyan rebel battalion Kakaa detained Russian citizens Vladimir Dolgov and Alexander Shadrov and some citizens of Ukraine and Belarus (25 people all in all). The people were charged with having restored military equipment used by the Gaddafi regime "to destroy the people of Libya."

The people were released with assistance from Russian Embassy officials on September 3, but were detained again on September 6 to investigate their possible involvement in the maintenance and modernization of tanks for the Gaddafi forces.

The Russian authorities have said more than once that they will seek prompt release of the Russian citizens.
