MAKHACHKALA. Oct 11 (Interfax) - A militant trapped in a privately owned house in the village of Endirei in Dagestan's Khasavyurt district was killed in a shootout with security services, a spokesman for the republic's branch of the Russian Investigative Committee told Interfax.
The killed militant has been identified as Khalimbek Khalimbekov, he said.
"An automatic weapon and a pistol were confiscated. Investigators are working at the site," he said.
Officers earlier tried to persuade the militant to surrender, but he started to shoot, injuring a policeman.
Khalimbekov, 22, was a member of a gang accused of murdering officers of law enforcement agencies, a National Antiterrorist Committee (NAC) spokesman told Interfax.
"The information available to law enforcement services indicates that Khalimbekov previously helped militants and joined the so-called Khasavyurt gang in May. This gang is suspected of killing officers of law enforcement services, extorting money from entrepreneurs and robbing them," the spokesman said.
An automatic weapon, a pistol and large amounts of ammunition were confiscated from the site.
None of the civilians was killed or injured in the shootout, he said.
