DUSHANBE. Oct 24 (Interfax) - A small group of young Tajiks has called for denouncing the recent agreement on the deployment of the 201st Russian military base in Tajikistan.
The appeal was published in the Facebook Tajik segment. The activists who defined themselves as "representatives of the Tajik youth" are collecting signatures in support of their initiative.
About 300 people, many of whom live outside of Tajikistan, have signed up within the past two weeks.
"We think that the period of stay (until 2042), the location (Dushanbe, Kulyab and Kurgan-Tyube) and the political and legal status (the so-called diplomatic immunity of Russian servicemen) fail to meet the interests of Tajik society," the appeal said.
The agreement, which permitted Russian servicemen to stay in Tajikistan until 2042, was signed during the Dushanbe visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin on October 5, 2012.
