KALININGRAD. Nov 28 (Interfax-AVN) - The Yantar Baltic Shipyard of the United Shipbuilding Corporation will launch the Yantar oceanographic ship built to the order of the Russian Defense Ministry on December 5.
The ship's hull is ready, main equipment has been installed and wiring and insulation works are in progress, shipyard spokesman Sergei Mikhailov told Interfax.
The Yantar is the lead oceanographic ship of Project 22010 designed at the Almaz Central Naval Design Bureau. The construction started on July 8, 2010, the day of the 65th anniversary of the shipyard. It was named after the shipyard.
The ship's delivery to the client is due in 2013.
Head of the Russian Defense Ministry's main department on deepwater research works Vice-Admiral Alexei Burilichev said in 2010 that the Navy would order another ship of Project 22010. He said the order would most probably be placed in 2014-2015 or even earlier in the case of sufficient allocations.
The Yantar is an ocean-class vessel designed to explore the underwater and oceanic bottom. It will have aboard two Mir submersibles, which can dive to 6,000 meters.
The ship of Project 22010 has the displacement of 5,230 tons, the length of 108 meters and the width of 17.2 meters.
