Suspected highly-placed St. Petersburg fraudsters questioned, some taken to Moscow - source

ST. PETERSBURG. Nov 30 (Interfax) - Officials with St. Petersburg's energy and engineering infrastructure department charged with fraud have been questioned, a law enforcement source told Interfax on Friday.

The questioning lasted until about midnight and most people went home, "but some were taken to Moscow," the source said.

Ten officials were brought to the city police department on Thursday to be questioned as part of the criminal inquiry into mishandling of the funding provided to build and repair heating and water supply systems, among them head of the city's energy committee Vladislav Petrov.

Police earlier exposed an organized group suspected of misappropriating 3 billion rubles in funds from the city budget.

The Russian Interior Ministry reported that 18 million rubles, $100,000 and 100,000 Euros in cash were discovered at Petrov's apartment alone.

A criminal inquiry has been started on counts of fraud.
