Armenian president urges Turkey to open border

YEREVAN. Dec 3 (Interfax) - Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan believes the Armenian-Turkish border should be opened without any preconditions on Turkey's part.

"We cannot but be worried by the fact that Turkey, which is aspiring for European Union membership, is continuing to unlawfully blockade Armenia. I am sure that the last closed European border should be opened immediately and without preconditions," Sargsyan said at a news briefing following the European People's Party's 2nd Eastern Partnership summit on Friday.

Apart from Sargsyan, taking part in the summit were also European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, European People's Party President Wilfried Martens, Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili and Moldovan Prime Minister Vlad Filat.

The participants in the summit passed the Yerevan declaration, which outlines a common vision of the EU's Eastern Partnership program and also touches upon regional issues, Sargsyan said.

"The Eastern Partnership program has been established based on common values. We are sure that the program's mission will be fully implemented when all countries become equally committed to European values. As the family of Christian-Democratic parties, the European People's Party cannot consider acceptable the violation of democratic freedoms, xenophobia, militant rhetoric, and the threat of the use of force," he said.

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili said European integration is a priority for Tbilisi. "This process should become irreversible at the Eastern partnership summit in Vilnius in 2013. Our prospect is European future. This is not only my dream or my party's dream but also a dream of our people," Saakashvili said.

Turkey closed the border with Armenia in 1993 soon after the start of the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh as a sign of solidarity with Azerbaijan.
