Russian envoy to EU does not expect breakthroughs at upcoming summit

MOSCOW. Dec 19 (Interfax) - Moscow does not expect breakthroughs at the upcoming Russia-EU summit but hopes the sides will be cooperative, Russian Permanent Representative to the European Union Vladimir Chizhov said in a Moscow-Brussels videoconference on Tuesday.

"If a breakthrough means the negation of earlier results and the beginning of something new, we would like to have less of such breakthroughs [at summits held] twice a year," he said.

Interaction with the EU is thorough and daily work, the diplomat said. "I'd rather not speak about sensations. Naturally, I hope that the positive attitude of summit delegates will make it a summit of cooperation rather than confrontation," Chizhov said.

Western and some of Russian media outlets are dramatizing Russia-EU relations ahead of the upcoming summit, the same as it has happened before, he said. "I think that every summit, and the upcoming summit will not be an exception, is a possibility of a frank conversation of strategic partners," the diplomat added.

It is not planned to sign agreements at the nearing summit, Chizhov said.
