Kyrgyz border, police officials negotiate settlement with residents of Uzbek exclave

OSH/BISHKEK. Jan 9 (Interfax) - The Kyrgyz authorities are holding talks on the repatriation of Kyrgyz nationals detained in the Uzbek exclave of Sox on Sunday.

"There are several citizens of Kyrgyzstan in the territory of Sox exclave. All due measures for their repatriation are taken," a newsletter of the Kyrgyz Defense Council received by Interfax on Monday says.

The exclave is located in Batken region in south Kyrgyzstan.

The newsletter says that the Uzbekistan reported that the Kyrgyz nationals were guaranteed security but did not state the exact number of Kyrgyz citizens staying in Uzbek territory. Earlier repots said over 20 people could be in question.

The newsletter notes that there was an incident on the Kyrgyz-Uzbek section of the state border on January 5.

Commander of the Kyrgyz State Border Service Zakir Tilenov, Interior Minister Shamil Atakhanov and Batken region top officials are now at the scene holding talks to settle the situation and repatriate the Kyrgyz nationals.
