Unified tracked, wheeled chassis prioritized in Army modernization - General Staff

MOSCOW. Jan 21 (Interfax-AVN) - Defense plants are designing new armaments and military hardware for the Russian Defense Ministry's order under the state armament program, General Staff Chief Col. Gen. Valery Gerasimov said at an intercom conference on Monday.

"A primary objective of the general purpose forces, whose core is the Army, is to design unified tracked and wheeled chassis. The chassis will carry combat vehicles (such as the main battle tank, the infantry combat vehicle, the armored personnel carrier, self-propelled artillery guns and air defense missile systems) and support vehicles - reconnaissance, communication, engineering, radiation, chemical and biological protection, logistics and others," Gerasimov said.

Materials related to the research and development in projects Bumerang, Kurganets and Armata were presented at the conference. A medium-sized unified tracked platform will be built for project Kurganets-25 and combat vehicles will be mounted on it. A medium-sized unified wheeled platform will be built for project Bumerang and combat vehicles will use it.

"I think that the fulfillment of the goal set by the Russian president to provide the Russian Armed Forces with modern hardware at 30% by 2015 and 70% by 2020 requires closer cooperation with defense plants and efficient control over design, tests and production of every piece of armaments and military hardware. Control sheets will be made for weaponry and hardware ordering clients - military commands. Army Commander Col. Gen. Vladimir Chirkin will report the development of new armaments and military hardware for the Army," Gerasimov said.
