Russian North Fleet withstands hurricane

SEVEROMORSK. Jan 21 (Interfax-AVN) - A hurricane that hit the Kola Peninsula did not harm the North Fleet, fleet spokesman Capt. 1st Class Vadim Serga told Interfax-AVN on Monday.

"Based on the weather forecast of the North Fleet hydro-meteorological center, the combat training plan of the fleet units was adjusted, ship positions along berths were changed with due account of the wind force and direction, tugboats were prepared for immediate response and measures were taken against icing of ship hulls," Serga said.

The gale in the Barents and White seas lasted for a day; the wind force reached 30-33 meters per second, the sea disturbance reached 6-7 points, and waves rolling on the Barents Sea coast were more than six meters tall. Visibility was limited. There were heavy snowfalls, blizzards and rapid icing of the ships.

All ships of the North Fleet were anchored at their permanent berths when the gale arrived. The ships accomplishing missions in the Barents and White seas were timely informed about the bad weather and returned to base, Serga said.

Weathermen said that the windstorms and blizzards along the Kola Peninsula coastline would continue on January 22-23, he said.
