MOSCOW. Jan 24 (Interfax) - The UN Security Council resolution on North Korea that was adopted on Tuesday does not affect the needs of the country's population for humanitarian and economic assistance, the Russian Foreign Ministry has stated.
"The additional restrictive measures against DPRK stipulated by the document are targeted and clearly linked with the need to stop North Korean programs from developing nuclear arms and ballistic missiles and do not affect the vital needs of the population for humanitarian aid or economic assistance," a report posted on the ministry website on Wednesday says.
"It is of principled importance that the resolution clearly states - and the Russian delegation strongly insisted on that - that no sanctions imposed against North Korea should have a negative impact on the operations of foreign diplomatic missions functioning in that country," the ministry added.
The Foreign Ministry urged the North Korean side "to correctly take the will of the international community expressed in the resolution, to renounce nuclear arms and all nuclear missile programs, to return to the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, the regimen of IAEA guarantees, and to join the CTBT (Comprehensive Nuclear Test Bank Treaty)."
Moscow said it does not expect any relevant sides to permit actions aggravating the situation. It confirmed its readiness to work together with partners in the six-nation format on the formation of mechanisms of peace and security in the region as a key channel of creating conditions for the resumption of the negotiation process.
