MOSCOW. Jan 28 (Interfax) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has urged foreign diplomats to be more correct in their comments on Russia's stance on the Syrian conflict.
"I heard another comment by the Department of State spokesperson when we responded to the appeal of Russian citizens, mostly women, permanently residing in Syria to help them resettle to Russia by planes of the Emergency Situations Ministry that brought humanitarian aid to the region; she said it was proof of Russia's disappointment in the regime [of the Syrian president] and its intention to stop supporting it," he told a press conference after Moscow negotiations with Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders.
"First of all, we were never charmed by that regime and never supported it," Lavrov said.
Every step Russia has taken assisted in the fulfillment of the Geneva Communique, including the agreement to set up a transitional governance body, which displays the wish of Moscow to stabilize the Syrian situation, he said.
"This is what our position is about: we do not support one or another personality in that tragedy. I expect our colleagues from other countries to be more correct in their comments on the Syrian situation in the context of Russia's moves," the Russian foreign minister stressed.
