YEREVAN. Feb 1 (Interfax) - An attempt to assassinate Armenian presidential candidate Paruir Airikyan, the leader of the National Union for Self-Determination, was made in the center of Yerevan on Thursday evening, an Armenian police spokesman told Interfax.
"Airikyan was rushed to the St. Gregory the Enlightener clinic with a gunshot wound to his chest. Investigators are working at the site," he said.
In an interview with Interfax, a hospital spokesman described the presidential candidate's condition as moderately serious.
Prime Minister Tigran Sarkisyan and Health Minister Derenik Dumanyan have arrived at the clinic.
Armenia's presidential election is due to take place on February 18.
