Kazakhstan ready for UN SC membership - foreign minister

BERLIN. Feb 1 (Interfax) - Kazakhstan has grown politically mature enough to become a member of the UN Security Council, Kazakh Foreign Minister Erlan Idrisov said.

"It is one of our important political projects. We believe that we have become politically mature enough to assume international responsibility, responsibility for global affairs as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council," he said at a session of the Berlin Eurasian Club.

"We expect that our partners will support us. Elections to the UN are competitive, but we are used to competition. The year of 2017 is twice as important for us because we hope to be elected to the UN Security Council, and we have already been chosen to host an important exhibition - EXPO-2017," the minister said.

Kazakhstan is going to conduct a campaign that will boost the country's role "as a proactive supporter of peace, cooperation and contacts at all levels and on all platforms," Idrisov said.

"We have been recognized universally as a nuclear disarmament leader. That is why nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation will be high on the agenda of our campaign ahead of the elections to the UN Security Council," he said.
