India acquits Russian arrested a year ago on suspicion of illegal possession of ammo

MOSCOW. Feb 6 (Interfax) - A Russian who was arrested in India in January 2012 on suspicion of illegal possession of ammunition an attempt to smuggle a gun cartridge onto an aircraft was acquitted on February 1, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.

Anatoly Valenko was arrested during check-in formalities at the Dabolim Airport in Goa on January 13 after a cartridge was found in his baggage and Valenko was put in a detention center in Vasco da Gama, Goa.

He was acquitted by the court of Dabolim village.

"The Russian Consulate General in Mumbai provided Valenko with necessary assistance throughout the period of consideration of his case. At present, documents are being prepared for his earliest possible return to his country," the Russian ministry said.
